Description

OPC UA is a standard component of modern industrial production facilities. OPC UA Field eXchange (UAFX) expands existing capabilities to include real-time functionality and data models for field devices and controllers, enabling the use of OPC UA for field communication. This connects OT and IT networks. UAFX can thus serve as a key piece of the puzzle for interoperability on the shop floor.

The integration of OT with IT must also address rising security requirements and threats. The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is a key European regulation that includes comprehensive requirements for software manufacturers and distributors that must be adhered to.

In this Technology Insight, we combine both topics and provide practical insights from academia and industry.

The following topics, among others, will be addressed:

  • OPC UA Field eXchange (UA FX): What does UAFX offer, who is driving UAFX, what is currently being worked on, timeline, and showcases
    • Markus Schoisswohl, involved with the OPC Foundation through Syn2Tec (presentation in German)
  • Cyber Resilience Act: requirements, relevance for product development, CRA & UA FX, outlook on “Forever Day Vulnerabilities”
    • George Gkoktsis, Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT (presentation in English)
  • Industry example: UA FX at B&R, status quo & future plan for B&R at ABB, UA FX application areas and products
    • Veli-Pekk (presentation in German)

This Technology Insight is a knowledge-sharing event organized within the framework of the SECURE project1, which supports small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe in strengthening their cyber resilience, implementing the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), and securing their digital production systems in a sustainable manner. The event is organized by the consortium partner Platform Industrie 4.0 Austria in collaboration with its partners and will be conducted partly in German and partly in English.
